The educational and scientific institute of distance and correspondence education begins its history since 1966, when the correspondence faculty was organized at the Odessa Polytechnic Institute. Such an event was dictated by the need to create appropriate conditions for higher education for working young people.

In 1993, the Faculty of Distance Learning included the Evening Department.

In 2005, the correspondence faculty was reorganized into the Education and Research Institute of Correspondence Education and in its structure the Directorate of Educational Centers was established within the framework of which a network of educational centers was established at enterprises and institutions in the cities of Kherson, Yuzhnoukrainsk, Energodar, Varash, Dnistrovsk, Berdichev, Zelenodolsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Yuzhne.

In 2009, for the development and wide introduction of distance learning technologies, the Educational and Scientific Institute of Part-Time Education was reorganized into the Educational and Research Institute of Distance and Extramural Education. In addition to the Department of Educational Centers, the Department of Distance Learning technologies and the pilot laboratory "Clean Air" were introduced, and later - the Department of Natural and Scientific Preparation.
